Job Overview

The Office of the Premier in Johannesburg, Gauteng, is seeking a State Law Advisor Grade 1 (LP-7). Responsibilities include providing professional legal advice on constitutional, administrative, labour, commercial, and public law, managing litigation, conducting legal research, vetting contracts, and drafting legislation. Requirements include an LLB degree or equivalent NQF level 7 in law, admission as an Attorney or Advocate, and at least 5 years of appropriate post-qualification litigation or advisory experience, alongside advanced legal research, analytical, and drafting skills.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or equivalent NQF level 7 qualification in law.
• Admittance as an Attorney or Advocate.
• At least 5 years appropriate post qualification litigation/ advisory experience.
• Advanced legal research, analytical and interpretation skills.
• Ability to develop sound legal arguments and provide practical legal solutions.
• Strong drafting skills for legal opinions, pleadings, reports and other legal documents.
• Expertise in dispute resolution, including arbitration, mediation and conciliation.
• Sound judgement and decision-making skills.
• Ability to assess legal risks and recommend appropriate interventions.
• Interviewing, investigation and fact-finding skills.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical capabilities.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide professional legal advice and opinions on constitutional, administrative, labour, commercial and public law matters.
• Furnish legal opinions to Gauteng Provincial Departments on the interpretation, application and possible conflict of laws.
• Manage and coordinate litigation involving the Office of the Premier, including liaison with the Office of the State Attorney and other relevant stakeholders.
• Assist with the implementation, coordination and monitoring of the Provincial Litigation Management Framework to safeguard the interests of the Province.
• Conduct legal research and advise management on legislative developments, case law and associated legal risks.
• Draft, review and vet agreements, contracts and other legal instruments.
• Assist with the drafting, certification, interpretation and final editing of legislation and subordinate legislation, including the preparation and processing of Bills.
• Represent the Office of the Premier in legal, intergovernmental and stakeholder forums and promote legal compliance, good governance and sound decisionmaking across GPG Departments.
• Contribute to the Directorate’s performance.
