MEDICAL SPECIALIST GRADE 1 TO 3 (GENERAL SURGERY) (SESSIONAL) (8 HOURS PER WEEK) (6-Month Contract) Garden Route District

Job Overview

Knysna Hospital in the Garden Route District is hiring a sessional Medical Specialist in General Surgery (Grades 1 to 3) on a 6-month contract basis for 8 hours per week. Responsibilities include providing specialist surgical services, clinical leadership, mentoring junior staff, clinical governance, and supporting outreach services. Applicants must be registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery, possess a valid driver's license, and have relevant experience depending on the grade.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
• Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
• Grade 1 Experience: None after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
• Grade 2 Experience: A minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
• Grade 3 Experience: A minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
• Valid driver's license (Code B/EB) and willingness to travel in the district.
• Knowledge and understanding of Health Care 2030.
• Excellent administrative and research skills.
• Computer literacy in MS Office.
• Clinical competencies including training and teaching skills.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Support the planning, governance and development of surgical services.
• Provide specialist General Surgery services at the District Hospital, including outpatient consultations, inpatient care, theatre services, minor procedures and management of complex surgical patients.
• Provide clinical leadership and governance for surgical services, including development and monitoring of clinical protocols, referral pathways, and quality-improvement initiatives.
• Provide supervision, mentoring and clinical support to Medical Officers, Community Service Medical Officers, interns and other health professionals.
• Strengthen access to appropriate surgical care through improved patient selection, theatre utilisation and waiting-list management.
• Conduct and support clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and patient-safety initiatives.
• Liaise with surgical specialists and subspecialists at Regional and Tertiary Hospitals to strengthen referral and counter-referral pathways.
• Support the decentralisation of surgical services through outreach, specialist clinics and clinical mentoring.
• Participate in the training of health professionals and in research relevant to district clinical and service needs.
