Job Overview

Knysna Hospital in the Garden Route District is seeking a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine for 16 sessions per week across Grades 1 to 3. Requirements include appropriate HPCSA registration, relevant experience ranging from none to 10+ years depending on the grade, a valid driver's licence, and administrative and clinical competencies. Responsibilities involve providing specialist internal medicine services, clinical governance, supervision of staff, clinical audits, and supporting outreach programmes. Requirements & Qualifications

• Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine.
• Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine (or proof of application for registration).
• Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine.
• Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA.
• Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA.
• Valid driver's license (Code B/EB) and willingness to travel in the district.
• Knowledge and understanding of Health Care 2030.
• Excellent administrative and research skills.
• Computer literacy in MS Office.
• Clinical competencies including training and teaching skills.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Support the planning, governance and development of clinical services at the District Hospital.
• Provide specialist Internal Medicine services including ward rounds, outpatient consultations, and management of complex medical patients.
• Provide clinical leadership and governance for Internal Medicine services, developing clinical protocols and quality-improvement initiatives.
• Provide supervision, mentoring and clinical support to Medical Officers, interns, and other health professionals.
• Support the management of complex and chronic medical conditions and strengthen continuity of care.
• Conduct and support clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and patient-safety initiatives.
• Liaise with specialists and subspecialists at Regional and Tertiary Hospitals to strengthen referrals and outreach.
• Support the decentralisation of specialist services through outreach, specialist clinics, and case discussions.
• Participate in the training of health professionals and in research relevant to district clinical and service needs.
