ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: LIBRARY SERVICES

Job Overview

The Department of Tourism is hiring an Assistant Director: Library Services based in Pretoria (Ref No: DT52/2026). The role requires an NQF 6 qualification in Library and Information Science, alongside 3 to 4 years of relevant experience, including 2 years at a senior practitioner level. Responsibilities include managing library operations, cataloguing and classification using Amlib and SABINET, collection development, budgeting, and organizing awareness campaigns. Candidates must possess strong administrative, financial, and computer skills, with a valid driver's licence.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A recognised NQF 6 qualification in Library and Information Science, or related field.
• Three to Four (3-4) years of relevant experience in library or information services.
• 2 years of experience must be at a senior practitioner level or equivalent.
• Familiarity with the cataloguing and classification of library materials.
• Knowledge of Government communication policies and frameworks.
• Knowledge of National Council for Library and Information Services Act, Legal Deposit Act, Copyright Act, and Constitution of South Africa.
• Knowledge of Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and Supply Chain Management processes.
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Electronic Communications and Transformations Act, Protection of Information Act, and Minimum Information Security Standards.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Managing Library Operations.
• Identifying, developing and maintaining library collection.
• Developing and maintaining library policies and standard operating procedures.
• Cataloguing and classification of library material.
• Facilitating library subscriptions.
• Supervising daily library operations and conducting stock taking.
• Facilitating the compilation of Library plans, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual performance reports.
• Provisioning of Information and circulation services.
• Facilitating the capturing and analysis of customer satisfaction surveys.
• Compiling and monitoring the library budget and annual expenditure.
• Procuring recommended library equipment, materials, maintenance, and upgrades.
• Maintaining working relationships with internal and external service providers for procurement.
• Facilitating compilation of the library's annual asset report.
• Providing cataloguing and classification of all library material for access to the online library cataloguing through Amlib from SABINET.
• Carrying out descriptive cataloguing using rules such as DEWEY, USMARS, AACR2, and SABICAT.
• Making use of available Library network standards to allow access through interlibrary loan services.
• Providing support in the development and maintenance of a photographic library repository.
• Developing marketing strategies and awareness campaigns such as Book Week and Library Week.
