SENIOR PUBLIC PROSECUTOR (TUTOR)

Job Overview

The National Prosecutions Service is hiring a Senior Public Prosecutor (Tutor) based in Emalahleni (Evander) under reference RECRUIT 2026/324. The role offers a salary package of R1 242 915 – R1 934 208 per annum. Candidates must hold an LLB or appropriate legal qualification, possess at least 8 years of post-qualification legal experience, and have litigation experience in both District and Regional Courts. Key responsibilities include tutoring aspirant prosecutors, managing and mentoring staff, conducting criminal proceedings and court presentations, and handling administrative duties.

Requirements & Qualifications

• An LLB degree, or any appropriate legal qualification for serving prosecutors seeking promotion
• At least eight (8) years post qualification legal experience
• Five (5) years’ experience in legal practice will be an added advantage
• Demonstrable competency in acting Independently, Professionally, Accountable and with Credibility
• Good management and administrative skills
• Proficiency in prosecution/litigation and competency in guiding investigations
• Ability to draft charge sheets and complex court documents without constant supervision
• Prosecutorial/litigation experience in both District and Regional Courts
• Willingness to travel within the DPP division
• Must possess a valid driver’s licence
• General computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Tutor aspirant prosecutors in an outcomes-based learning programme
• Assess learner competence, conduct assessment tasks, monitor progress and provide constructive feedback
• Manage, supervise, train and mentor prosecutors
• Study case dockets and determine whether to institute and conduct criminal proceedings, maintenance matters and inquests
• Prepare matters for court by guiding investigations, consulting witnesses and obtaining additional evidence
• Present the State’s case, lead witnesses, conduct cross-examination and address the court on conviction and sentence
• Prioritise high-impact corruption and other matters, prepare opinions and heads of argument
• Conduct performance assessments and assist the Chief Prosecutor with staff assessments
• Manage, control and attend to the administration of the Lower Courts
• Promote partner integration, community involvement and victim-centred services
