Job Overview

The National Prosecutions Service is hiring Regional Court Control Prosecutors for centers in Emalahleni (Evander), Emalahleni (Kwa-Mhlanga), and Middelburg (Elukwatini). Applicants must hold an LLB or appropriate legal qualification for serving prosecutors, with at least six years of post-qualification legal experience. Responsibilities include managing and conducting court prosecutions, supervising legal staff, screening dockets, guiding investigations, and ensuring court productivity. A valid driver's licence, computer literacy, and strong knowledge of public service legislation and criminal law are required.

Requirements & Qualifications

• An LLB degree, or for serving prosecutors seeking promotion, any appropriate legal qualification.
• At least six (6) years post qualification legal experience.
• Demonstrable competency in acting independently, professionally, accountably and with credibility.
• Good management skills.
• Knowledge of legislation and regulations applicable to the public service, including the Constitution, the Criminal Procedure Act, the Public Service Act, and the Labour Law Act.
• Ability to act independently or within minimum supervision.
• Proficiency in prosecution and litigation.
• Competency in guiding investigations and giving instructions in complex or more difficult common law and statutory offences in Regional and District Court.
• Willingness to travel within the DPP division.
• General computer literacy and knowledge of programs in Microsoft Office.
• A valid drivers’ licence.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Manage, supervise and conduct prosecutions in the Regional and District Courts in accordance with applicable legislation, NPA policy directives and related instructions.
• Screen dockets, make prosecutorial decisions, guide investigations, ensure trial readiness and prepare matters for court.
• Conduct and manage criminal proceedings, including bail applications, trials, sentence proceedings and other complex matters.
• Consult with victims, witnesses, investigating officers, legal representatives and other stakeholders while applying a victim-centred approach.
• Draft and check charge sheets, plea and sentence agreements, legal opinions, reports, representations and other court documents.
• Promote court productivity through case flow management, stakeholder engagement and appropriate use of statutory mechanisms to shorten proceedings.
• Monitor backlog, remand detainee, priority, AFU, money laundering and other prescribed matters.
• Manage and verify performance information, court returns, registers, reports and ECMS/ICMS data to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Identify operational challenges, implement corrective measures and report on progress.
• Manage, train, coach, mentor and guide prosecutors, monitor the quality of their work, assist with performance management and deal with disciplinary matters where required.
