SENIOR LABORATORY ASSISTANT

Job Overview

The Department of Agriculture seeks a Senior Laboratory Assistant based in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, offering a salary of R237 453 per annum (Level 05). Requirements & Qualifications

• Grade 12 Certificate
• Minimum of 3 years relevant experience in Laboratory and Horticulture
• Knowledge of the Public Service and Departmental prescripts/policies
• Knowledge of Agricultural Product Standards Act 119 of 1990 and Liquor Products Act 60 of 1989
• Knowledge and application of Laboratory quality systems
• Computer skills and application/usage of computer software
• Valid driver’s licence and the ability to drive

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Prepare samples and perform routine analysis for chemical residues, dairy, processed food, and liquor products
• Collect, label, take, and prepare sample material by weighing, drying, and cutting
• Prepare media, stains, buffers, reagents, and smears
• Perform extractions, basic analyses, and record results
• Store, pack, and transport samples, and assist in decontamination and waste disposal
• Perform basic maintenance, verification, and calibration on selected equipment and instrumentation
• Maintain tidiness of laboratories, clean and sterilise glassware and equipment
• Perform inventory control of equipment and consumables, and maintain recordkeeping registers
• Comply with health and safety regulations
