SENIOR AGRICULTURAL SCIENTIST (SENIOR LECTURER)

Job Overview

The Grootfontein Agricultural Development Institute in Middelburg, Eastern Cape, is seeking a Senior Agricultural Scientist (Senior Lecturer). The role involves curriculum development, lecturing, student support, agricultural research, and farm production unit management. Requirements include a Grade 12 certificate, a BSc in Agriculture (Animal Science), and at least 3 years of higher education experience, alongside relevant public service knowledge and a valid driver's licence.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Grade 12 Certificate
• Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc) in Agriculture (Animal Science)
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the higher education environment
• Knowledge and understanding of all relevant legislation and regulations that govern the Public Service
• Knowledge of Government policies and priorities in terms of Agriculture
• Knowledge and understanding of the white paper on the transformation of the Public Service (Batho Pele)
• Computer skills
• Supervisory and management skills
• Formal training and presentation skills/facilitation skills
• Willingness to work extended hours
• Ability to work proactively and under pressure
• Valid driver’s licence
• Willingness to travel

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Oversee the development and implementation of the academic curriculum for the subject field according to relevant quality standards
• Determine training needs of clients and industrial role players and identify gaps in the curriculum
• Prepare syllabus guides, lesson plans and presentation of practical, theoretical and/or short courses
• Ensure assessment and moderation of assessments take place in accordance with required standards
• Conduct classes, present lectures and tutorials, compile question papers, grade assignments and perform statistical analysis of results
• Support students through an advisory and consultative role and provide vocational training to HET, FET and other stakeholders
• Provide oversight, guidance, mentoring and assistance to students in planning and management of production units (mini farms)
• Oversee and conduct applied information research on production units and present findings at relevant platforms
• Provide verbal and written advice and assistance to farmers in the subject field
• Perform and oversee administrative and extracurricular functions including compilation of timetables, student records and committee service
• Perform human resource responsibilities including supervision, development and performance management of subordinates
• Monitor expenditure and utilisation of assets in compliance with Public Service prescripts
