Job Overview

Groote Schuur Hospital, New Somerset Hospital, and Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital are hiring 10 Registrars in Medical Anaesthetics on a 4-year contract. Candidates must possess an MBChB degree, current HPCSA registration as a Medical Practitioner in Independent Practice, and clinical experience. Responsibilities include providing safe anaesthetic care, ICU management, pre-operative assessments, theatre supervision, and participating in research and training. Requirements & Qualifications

• Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
• Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner (Independent Practice).
• Compulsory commuted overtime, emergency and after hour call cover.
• Other appropriate Post-Graduate Medical Diploma, Certificate or Degree.
• Knowledge and practical skills for safe regional and general anaesthesia.
• Knowledge and appropriate use of equipment.
• Experience in Internal Medicine or critical care under supervision of a Specialist.
• Experience in Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
• Effective leadership and interpersonal skills.
• Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA).
• Current certificate of ATLS/ACLS.
• Completion of FCA Part 1.
• Advanced computer literacy skills (MS Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
• Appropriate and sufficient clinical experience since obtaining the degree of MBChB and after completion of internal rotations.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Supervision in theatre/ICU and management of theatre lists/staff, especially after hours.
• Provision of safe anaesthetic care to patients.
• Pre-op assessment of patients and advice to surgeons regarding workup.
• Post-operative analgesia and recovery of patients from anaesthesia.
• Learn the art and science of anaesthesia practice and ICU Medicine.
• Learn critical skills required by an anaesthetist.
• Involvement in research/audits relating to anaesthesia, intensive care and pain management.
• Intensive Care Therapy.
• Attend tutorials and assist with the training of interns, medical students, nursing staff and paramedics.
