Job Overview

Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal is hiring a Professional Nurse Grade 1/2 (Specialty Stream) for the Operating Theatre component. Applicants must possess a basic R425 nursing qualification, a post-basic qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science, valid SANC registration, and relevant nursing experience ranging from 4 to 14 years depending on the grade. Responsibilities include providing holistic specialised peri-operative nursing care, resource utilisation, shift leadership, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Requirements & Qualifications

• Basic R425 qualification (Degree/Diploma in nursing) or equivalent qualification allowing registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse with Midwifery.
• A post-basic qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science with a duration of at least 1 year, accredited with SANC.
• Certificates of Registration with SANC (General Nursing and Midwifery).
• Current registration with SANC (2026).
• For Grade 1: Minimum of 4 years appropriate/recognizable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing.
• For Grade 2: Minimum of 14 years appropriate/recognizable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing, with at least 10 years in Operating Theatre Nursing Science after obtaining the post-basic qualification.
• Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of nursing legislation and related legal and ethical nursing practices.
• Possess communication skills for dealing with patients, supervisors, and multidisciplinary teams, including report writing.
• Good human relations and alignment with Batho Pele principles.
• Basic understanding of HR and financial policies and practices.
• Basic computer literacy.
• Knowledge of peri-operative nursing care and practices.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Provision of optimal, holistic specialised nursing care with set standards and within a professional/legal framework in the Operating Theatre.
• Effective utilisation of resources.
• Participation in training and research.
• Provision of support to nursing services and multidisciplinary theatre teams.
• Maintain professional growth, ethical standards and self-development.
• Display a concern for patients, promoting and advocating proper treatment and care, including awareness and willingness to respond to patient needs, requirements and expectations.
• Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure good nursing care that is cost-effective, equitable and efficient.
• Attend meetings, workshops and training programmes as assigned by the supervisor.
• Assist with relief duties of the supervisor and act as a shift leader on both day and night when necessary.
• Work shifts as per allocation, including night shifts, weekends, and Public Holidays.
