Job Overview

New Somerset Hospital under Metro Health Services is hiring a Pharmacist (Grade 1 to 3, Production). Applicants must hold a basic qualification accredited by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) and be registered as a Pharmacist. Responsibilities include providing pharmaceutical care, conducting ward audits, managing medicine procurement and storage, controlling pharmaceutical expenditure, conducting outreach visits, and supervising pharmacy assistants. Experience requirements range from none for Grade 1 up to 13+ years for Grade 3.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Minimum educational qualification: Basic qualification accredited with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) that allows registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist.
• Registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist.
• Grade 1 Experience: None after registration as Pharmacist with the SAPC in respect of SA qualified employees, or 1-year relevant experience for foreign qualified employees.
• Grade 2 Experience: Minimum of 5 years appropriate experience after registration as a Pharmacist with the SAPC for SA qualified employees, or 6 years for foreign qualified employees.
• Grade 3 Experience: Minimum of 13 years relevant experience after registration as a Pharmacist with the SAPC for SA qualified employees, or 14 years for foreign qualified employees.
• Willingness to perform on-call duties and work overtime, after hours including weekends and public holidays.
• Valid Driver's license.
• Knowledge of National and Provincial Health Policies and Pharmaceutical Acts and Laws.
• Ability to work accurately under pressure and maintain a high standard of professionalism.
• Ability and willingness to train staff.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Computer literacy.
• Familiarity with Hospital level healthcare Environment, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Rational Medicine Use.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform relief duties to provide quality pharmaceutical care to patients by monitoring work procedures, ensuring compliance to provincial code list and ensuring clinical service delivery.
• Assist with ensuring quality of care of pharmacy services by doing ward audits in areas where medicine is kept.
• Assist with medicine management by ensuring safe and reliable procurement, storage, control and distribution of quality pharmaceuticals.
• Assist with managing pharmaceutical expenditure including monitoring, evaluation and analysis of expenditure trends and implementing strategies to control expenditure within financial prescripts.
• Assist with collating and interpreting pharmaceutical data and ensure representation of pharmacy services at all relevant meetings.
• Conduct outreach visits to facilities within the substructure and provide pharmaceutical services, advice and support, including inspections, monitoring and assessment.
• Support with monitoring of Human Resources and supervising of Pharmacists Assistants to ensure optimum productivity and people development.
