Job Overview

The Mpumalanga Department of Health is seeking two Optometrists (Grade 1-3) at King Nyabela Hospital (Middelburg Hospital) within the Nkangala District. Applicants must possess a Senior Certificate, an appropriate qualification, and active registration with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Experience requirements range from zero years for Grade 1, 10+ years for Grade 2, and 20+ years for Grade 3. Responsibilities include coordinating optometric eye care activities, performing eye examinations, managing eye conditions, participating in the Integrated School Health Programme, and conducting mass refraction across district hospitals. A valid driver's licence is essential.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Senior Certificate / Grade 12
• Appropriate qualification allowing for registration with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Optometrist
• Grade 1: No experience required after registration with HPCSA
• Grade 2: Minimum of 10 years relevant experience after registration with HPCSA
• Grade 3: 20 years and more relevant experience after registration with HPCSA
• Knowledge of Integrated School Health services, Non-Communicable Diseases, and Health Awareness Calendar (Eye Health)
• Good communication skills (verbal and written)
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
• Knowledge of Batho Pele Principles, Patients Right Charter, PMDS, and PFMA
• Valid Driver's Licence

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Coordinate the implementation and monitoring of optometric eye care activities and services in the hospital
• Aim to improve eye health and eliminate avoidable visual impairment and blindness
• Coordinate and monitor optometric care activities in the area and improve refractive error services
• Promote eye health and improve the quality of refractive services in the district
• Participate in district Awareness Campaigns and the Integrated School Health Programme
• Report monthly statistics
• Participate in the procurement and issuing of spectacles and assistive optical devices
• Examine, diagnose, and manage eye conditions as per Optometry scope of practice
• Exercise safeguarding of all assistive optical devices, consumables, and equipment
• Collaborate with stakeholders in eye care service delivery
• Participate in the training of School health nurses and Primary Health Care nurses
• Visit different hospitals in the district to render Mass Refraction according to the itinerary or District Eye Programme plan
• Perform any other duties as delegated by the supervisor
