MEDICAL SPECIALIST SESSIONS: CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY

Job Overview

Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital is hiring three Medical Specialists in Cardiothoracic Surgery on a sessional appointment not exceeding 12 months (20 hours per week per person). Candidates must hold an MBChB degree and active registration with the HPCSA as a Specialist Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Depending on the grade, experience ranges from none to 10 years. Duties involve providing clinical services, perioperative care, surgical management, teaching, and postgraduate training supervision. Requirements & Qualifications

• MBChB Degree
• Current registration as a Specialist Cardiothoracic Surgery with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
• Grade 1: No experience required after registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist (Cardiothoracic Surgery)
• Grade 2: Five (5) years appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist (Cardiothoracic Surgery)
• Grade 3: Ten (10) years appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist (Cardiothoracic Surgery)
• Additional experience in providing a specialist service in either VATS surgery, cardiac transplant surgery, Op-CAB, ECMO or oesophageal surgery
• Comprehensive knowledge of the specialty discipline of Cardiothoracic Surgery including General Thoracic Surgery, and Surgery for Acquired & Congenital Cardiovascular Disease
• Surgical skills in the operative management of diseases within the specialty
• Teaching and computer literacy are essential requirements
• Training in a cardiothoracic unit in an accredited academic centre either within the country or elsewhere
• Competence in clinical evaluation, interpretation of special investigations, operative intervention, and post-operative management

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide a clinical service encompassing the diagnosis, investigation, perioperative care and surgical management of cardiothoracic patients
• Actively participate in the academic programme run by the department for the postgraduate training of registrars including teaching and research
• Supervise and upskill registrars and junior consultants to enhance operative clinical skills and decision making
• Achieve a level of theoretical knowledge and surgical skills requisite to the training of a Cardiothoracic Surgeon
• Participate in after-hours services when required
