Job Overview

Mitchells Plain District Hospital seeks a Medical Officer Grade 1 to 3 (Anaesthesia) within the Chief Directorate: Metro Health Services. Responsibilities include administering anaesthesia, pre-operative assessments, resuscitation, intra-operative management, post-operative care, equipment maintenance, and clinical supervision. Requirements include an appropriate qualification allowing HPCSA registration as a Medical Practitioner, relevant experience based on grade (0 to 10+ years), a valid driver's license, and compulsory commuted overtime.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Medical Practitioner.
• Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Practitioner.
• Grade 1 Experience: None after registration as Medical Practitioner with the HPCSA (or 1 year for foreign qualified employees not requiring community service).
• Grade 2 Experience: Minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as Medical Practitioner after HPCSA registration (or 6 years for foreign qualified employees).
• Grade 3 Experience: Minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as Medical Practitioner after HPCSA registration (or 11 years for foreign qualified employees).
• A valid (Code B/EB) driver’s license.
• Compulsory participation in commuted overtime on a shared 24-hour roster.
• Willingness to participate in teaching, audits, research and quality improvement projects.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Administration of anaesthesia and related duties including pre-operative assessments and resuscitation.
• Intra-operative management and post-operative care in the recovery unit and surgical wards.
• Ensure fully functional operating theatre equipment, including consumable equipment stocks and capital equipment functionality.
• Perform general and neuraxial anaesthesia, procedural sedation and regional nerve plexus blocks where required.
• Manage and coordinate theatre lists in terms of efficient utilisation of operative resources.
• Proactive consultation with other theatre users and theatre nursing staff on a shared-utilisation surgical platform.
• Maintain diligent attention to all aspects of medical record-keeping.
• Teaching, lecturing and clinical supervision of medical students, interns, rotating supernumerary registrars, new medical officers and nursing staff.
• Participate in clinical audits, surveys, gathering of theatre statistics and involvement in research projects where required.
