ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER SPECIALISED PRODUCTION: CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION (X2 POSTS)

Job Overview

The Department is seeking two Environmental Officer Specialised Production professionals for Criminal Investigation roles based in Pretoria (Ref No: RCSM28/2026) and Cape Town (Ref No: RCSM29/2026) with a salary of R518 769 per annum. Candidates require an Honours degree (NQF8) in Natural or Environmental Sciences/Management and at least three years of investigative experience. Responsibilities include conducting criminal investigations into environmental crimes, managing evidence, compiling case dockets, and collaborating with prosecuting authorities and SAPS.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Honours degree (NQF8) in Natural/Environmental Sciences/Management or relevant qualification as recognised by SAQA
• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in criminal investigations or a related investigative field
• Demonstrable experience in conducting criminal investigations, gathering and managing evidence, interviewing witnesses, obtaining affidavits and warning statements, compiling investigation reports, and preparing case dockets
• Knowledge of investigation best practices, environmental policies and legislation, NEMA, Criminal Procedure Act, constitutional law, administrative law, and evidence management
• Sound knowledge of environmental crimes associated with waste management, pollution incidents, unlawful disposal of waste, contaminated land, and industrial pollution
• Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel extensively
• Good written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy, and strong investigative and analytical skills

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Conduct criminal investigations into environmental offences, focusing on waste and pollution-related crimes in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Act and NEMA
• Conduct inspections, site investigations, and crime scene activities
• Collect, preserve, and manage evidence, including environmental samples, ensuring proper chain of custody
• Obtain affidavits, warning statements, and draft/serve subpoenas
• Register criminal cases with the South African Police Service and maintain accurate records
• Compile comprehensive criminal case dockets and investigation reports for submission to prosecuting authorities
• Manage post-investigation phases including prosecutor consultations, witness preparation, and court attendance
• Participate in compliance and enforcement operations, multidisciplinary investigations, and strategic projects
• Liaise with government authorities, the National Prosecuting Authority, SAPS, Environmental Management Inspectors, and laboratories
