Job Overview

The Eastern Cape Department of Health is hiring a Chief Engineer Grade A at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, OR Tambo District. The role requires a Mechanical Engineering degree, six years of post-qualification experience as a registered professional Engineer with ECSA, and a valid GCC Factories. Responsibilities include overseeing machinery maintenance as per GMR 2.1, enforcing OHS Act standards, managing budgets, and supervising technical staff. The salary ranges from R1 137 108 to R1 505 797 per annum.

Requirements & Qualifications

• National Senior Certificate
• Degree in Mechanical Engineering (B Eng/BSC (Eng) or relevant qualification
• Six (6) years post qualification experience required as a registered professional Engineer
• Compulsory registration with ECSA as Professional Engineer
• Valid Government Certificate of Competency (GCC Factories) is highly mandatory for plants exceeding 3000 kW / 10000 kVA
• Programme and project management competencies
• Engineering design and analysis knowledge
• Knowledge of legal compliance, technical report writing, and PFMA
• Comprehensive knowledge of the Public Service Act and the OHS Act
• A valid Driver’s licence
• Computer literate

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Formally accept the written GMR 2.1 appointment to oversee all machinery maintenance and safety requirements as per the OHS Act regulations and standards
• Enforce occupational health and safety standards, lead incident investigations, conduct safety risk audits, and liaise with the Department of Employment and Labour inspectors
• Develop, manage, and audit preventive, corrective, and predictive engineering maintenance systems to maximise plant and equipment uptime
• Control Capex and operational budgets, manage site services, maintenance projects and coordinate Maintenance & Repair shutdowns
• Supervise technical staff, manage workplace discipline, and monitor performance and development
