SENIOR LEGAL ADMINISTRATION OFFICER (MR6): LITIGATION SUPPORT

Job Overview

The Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries is hiring two Senior Legal Administration Officers (MR6) for Litigation Support based in Pretoria. Candidates must hold an LLB degree or equivalent qualification and possess at least 8 years of post-qualification legal experience. Key responsibilities include managing litigation matters, determining liability for losses and damages to state property, providing legal advice, ensuring compliance with administrative and environmental laws such as PAJA, and drafting ministerial submissions. A valid Code B driver's licence and willingness to travel are required.

Requirements & Qualifications

• LLB degree or relevant qualification as recognised by SAQA
• A minimum of 8 years post qualification experience in the provision of legal services
• Knowledge of Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Environmental Law, PAJA, and the rules of the various courts including High Courts and Magistrate’s Courts
• Knowledge and experience in judicial review applications
• Knowledge of environmental laws will be an added advantage
• Sound organising and planning, computer literacy, creativity, basic project management, good communication, presentation and reporting skills
• Good analytical, research, and drafting skills
• Ability to work in a team, proactive, problem-solving and positive attitude, and ability to adhere to deadlines
• Leadership, facilitation, and strong diplomatic skills
• Ability to work long hours and to travel to various courts and do site inspections when required
• Valid Code B driver's licence and willingness to travel

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Manage litigation matters and provide high-quality litigation and related legal support services
• Provide alternative dispute resolution assistance to protect and conserve the environment
• Determine liability on losses and damages to state property and facilitate recovery with the assistance of the State Attorney
• Provide litigation management services and general legal advice ensuring compliance with the legislative framework and Rules of Court
• Ensure department compliance with the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA)
• Periodically conduct training and information sharing sessions regarding litigation and losses and damages to state property
• Provide legal support and advice on the interpretation of environmental legislation, PAJA, and PAIA in appeal-related matters
• Provide litigation support including compilation of court records and attend consultations with legal counsel on appeal decisions taken on review
• Draft ministerial submissions
