REGISTRAR (MEDICAL)

Job Overview

The North West Department of Health is hiring Medical Registrars for fixed-term contracts in Paediatric Surgery, General Surgery, and Anaesthesia across multiple hospitals including Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex, Joe Morolong Memorial Hospital, Mafikeng Provincial Hospital, and Potchefstroom Hospital. Candidates must possess an appropriate qualification allowing HPCSA registration as an Independent Practitioner and have completed post-community service. Responsibilities include patient diagnosis and treatment, supervision of junior staff, administrative duties, teaching, and after-hours work.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Registrar (Independent Practitioner).
• Must have completed Post Community Service.
• Current proof of registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as Medical Practitioner in Independent Practice.
• Valid work permit for Non-South African Citizens (if applicable).
• Work experience in the field of Paediatrics Surgery or General Surgery as a Medical Practitioner for the period of 12 months (added advantage).
• CMSA part 1 examinations (added advantage).
• Auxiliary courses relevant to the field of Medical Practitioner: ACLS, BSS and ATLS (added advantage).

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Interview, investigate, diagnose, and oversee the treatment of patients.
• Supervise junior doctors including undergraduate students, interns, and community service doctors.
• Attend relevant administrative meetings such as mortality meetings and near miss meetings.
• Complete medico-legal documents timeously including death certificates.
• Improve quality of care by providing appropriate clinical care.
• Reduce medical litigation by exercising good clinical ethos.
• Implement and monitor adherence to National Core Standards (norms and standards).
• Participate in all activities of the discipline in relation to teaching and research.
• Participate in multidisciplinary teams for the management of patients.
• Perform practical procedures relevant to the care of patients.
• Ensure effective administration and safety record keeping in the department.
• Work after hours including nights, weekends, and public holidays to provide continuous uninterrupted care.
