Job Overview

Chief Directorate: Metro Health Services at New Somerset Hospital is recruiting a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology for Grade 1 to 3 on a sessional basis (5 hours per week) until 31 March 2029. Responsibilities include providing specialist outpatient care, ROP screening of neonates, surgical services at Eerste Rivier Hospital, and outreach support to surrounding district hospitals. Requirements include HPCSA registration as a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology, relevant experience based on the grade, a valid driver's licence, and strong clinical, counselling, and surgical skills.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology.
• Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology.
• Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology.
• Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of a foreign qualified employee) as a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology.
• Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of a foreign qualified employee) as a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology.
• Valid Driver’s licence.
• Strong ethical principles and relevant clinical and counselling skills.
• Computer literacy.
• Leadership-, interpersonal- and organisational skills.
• Tertiary knowledge and skills in the field of Trauma and Emergency Ophthalmology Surgery as well as district level elective Ophthalmology.
• Appropriate experience in Ophthalmologic surgery as the primary surgeon and treating specialist.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide specialist outpatient care to patients requiring services within the domain of ophthalmology.
• Provide specialist care in ROP screening of neonates.
• Provide surgical service to patients from New Somerset Hospital at Eerste Rivier Hospital for designated Ophthalmology lists.
• Provide outreach or support to surrounding District Hospitals that refers patients to New Somerset Hospital.
