Job Overview

Karl Bremer Hospital under Metro Health Services is hiring a Medical Specialist in General Surgery for a 12-month sessional contract (20 hours per week) across Grades 1 to 3. Responsibilities include clinical service delivery with a focus on endoscopy, theatre procedures, ward rounds, clinical governance, and teaching junior doctors. Applicants must be registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery, possess relevant clinical experience, and have a valid driver's license.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
• Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
• Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
• Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council).
• Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council).
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel.
• Clinical experience with General Surgery, including endoscopy and laparoscopic surgery.
• Ability to achieve and maintain good interpersonal relations with staff, patients, and families.
• Excellent clinical notes, referral writing skills, sound verbal and written communication skills, and analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Sufficient clinical and academic skills to handle a large clinical workload.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Provision of clinical service delivery at specialist level across the full spectrum of General Surgery services with a focus on endoscopy service.
• Perform surgical procedures and duties in theatre as needed.
• Conduct consultant ward rounds with senior decision making regarding patient care, disposition decisions, and oversight of OPD services.
• Ensure clinical governance through accurate medical record keeping, data/trend analysis, contribution to Morbidity & Mortality meetings, and management of complaints.
• Use existing digital platforms for referrals and patient-related documentation.
• Engage in teaching, training, and research activities, including supervision and teaching of junior doctors and participation in the hospital academic program.
• Contribute to the improvement of internal systems within the General Surgery service within the hospital and Metro East ecosystem.
• Participate in the wider management of medical services within the hospital, both clinical and administrative.
