Job Overview

Mitchells Plain District Hospital seeks a Medical Officer (Grade 1 to Grade 3) specializing in Obstetrics and Gynaecology within the Metro Health Services. Candidates must be registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner with varying experience requirements per grade. Responsibilities include clinical management of O&G cases, independent theatre operations, resuscitation of critically ill patients, supervision of students and staff, and administrative duties. A valid driver's licence and compulsory commuted overtime apply.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Medical Practitioner.
• Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Practitioner.
• Grade 1 Experience: None after registration as Medical Practitioner with the HPCSA (or 1-year relevant experience for foreign qualified employees exempt from community service).
• Grade 2 Experience: Minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as Medical Practitioner after HPCSA registration (or 6 years for foreign qualified employees).
• Grade 3 Experience: Minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as Medical Practitioner after HPCSA registration (or 11 years for foreign qualified employees).
• A valid (Code B/EB) driver’s licence.
• Commuted overtime contract is compulsory, as well as the ability to work after-hours.
• Appropriate experience and skills in obstetrics and gynaecology care.
• Ability to work in a team and with all levels of staff.
• Must be able to do a Caesarean section safely and without supervision.
• Must be able to perform assisted deliveries (vacuums) safely and without supervision.
• Computer literacy in MS Office mandatory.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Clinical management of all non-acute and emergency O&G presentation to the emergency centres (labour ward and gynae EC).
• Operating independently including complicated caesarean sections, laparotomies for ectopic pregnancies, evacuation of uterus, and postpartum sterilizations.
• Managing critically ill patients including resuscitation.
• Management of early pregnancy complications requiring basic O&G ultrasound competency.
• Supervision and teaching of students, interns and midwives.
• Provide an efficient administration service regarding all clinical and non-clinical matters and medico-legal work.
• Provide guidance and leadership towards the realization of strategic goals and objectives of the department.
• Ensure a cost-efficient service at clinical level with regards to laboratory services, blood, medicine, consumables and equipment.
