Job Overview

A part-time Medical Officer (Psychiatry) (5/8th) position is available at New Somerset Hospital within the Chief Directorate: Metro Health Services. Grades 1 to 3 are offered with salaries ranging from R650 877 to R859 527 per annum. Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification allowing registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner, along with relevant post-registration experience depending on the grade. Responsibilities include providing clinical psychiatric services, supervising interns and junior staff, clinical teaching, and participating in after-hours duties.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Appropriate qualification allowing registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
• Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
• Grade 1: None after registration as Medical Practitioner with the HPCSA for SA-qualified employees, or 1-year relevant experience for foreign-qualified employees.
• Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after HPCSA registration for SA-qualified employees, or 6 years for foreign-qualified employees.
• Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after HPCSA registration for SA-qualified employees, or 11 years for foreign-qualified employees.
• Willingness to provide after-hours emergency service on a duty roster, including weekends and public holidays.
• Clinical experience in a district or regional hospital providing comprehensive psychiatric care.
• Post-internship experience in psychiatry including clinical experience with completion of MHCA forms.
• Completion of or exemption from South African Community Service.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide a high-quality clinical service to patients and their families.
• Supervision of medical interns to ensure quality of care and good clinical outcomes.
• Interaction with and supervision of nursing staff, allied professionals, and students.
• Informal teaching and training of junior staff in the course of clinical work.
• Clinical teaching of undergraduate medical students and nurses.
• Effective and efficient administration of clinical services.
• Administration of medical officer rosters.
• Improve professional competence by regular self-learning and reflection with the application of current evidence.
