Job Overview

Buffalo City Metro Forensic Pathology Services (Ku Gompo) is hiring Medical Officer Grade 1 to 3 positions. Responsibilities include performing medico-legal post-mortem examinations, conducting crime scene investigations, finalizing reports within a 12-week turnaround, giving expert court testimony, and training medical students. Candidates must be registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner, with varying experience requirements based on the grade level. Applications must be submitted via email.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Appropriate qualification allowing registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
• Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
• Grade 1 Experience: None after registration for SA qualified employees, or 1 year relevant experience for foreign qualified employees.
• Grade 2 Experience: Minimum 5 years appropriate experience after registration for SA qualified employees, or 6 years for foreign qualified employees.
• Grade 3 Experience: Minimum 10 years appropriate experience after registration for SA qualified employees, or 11 years for foreign qualified employees.
• Ability to work independently to conduct autopsies and crime scene investigations.
• Good practical knowledge of forensic pathology theory and practice.
• Knowledge of relevant legislations and applicable parts of the Occupational Health Act and Risk assessment process.
• Ability to perform medico-legal post-mortem examinations and crime scene investigations.
• Certificate of competence as a forensic medical officer or work experience in forensic pathology.
• Excellent communication skills and computer literacy.
• Basic knowledge of forensic photography.
• Resilience and ability to work with fragmented and decomposed remains.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform medico-legal post-mortem examinations and complete all related investigations and documentation.
• Finalise post-mortem reports within a 12-week turnaround period.
• Compile and complete post-mortem reports and medico-legal documentation accurately and timeously.
• Provide conclusion of causes of death based on ancillary investigation reports.
• Provide efficient expert evidence in court related to autopsied cases, including formulating forensic second opinions.
• Attend and examine incident cases.
• Provide support to Heads of Clinical Units and Departments, and Medical Specialists.
• Assist with teaching and training of medical and forensic students, and forensic pathology officers.
