GENERAL WORKER CIVIL MAINTENANCE

Job Overview

The Department of Water and Sanitation seeks five General Workers for Civil Maintenance based in Worcester, Western Cape. Applicants must possess an ABET certificate and basic knowledge of equipment handling, garden maintenance, chemical use, and health and safety procedures. Responsibilities include general labour, infrastructure maintenance, cleaning and repairing water supply systems like canals and dams, and groundskeeping. Candidates must be willing to work in or near rivers, dams, canals, and confined spaces, and travel for duties throughout the Western Cape.

Requirements & Qualifications

• An ABET certificate
• Higher qualifications will serve as an added advantage
• Experience in performing manual work will serve an added advantage
• Basic knowledge of general work in handling equipment and appliances
• Knowledge of lawn care processes, pruning, and trimming techniques
• Knowledge of chemical use (dilution/mix) and chemical product knowledge
• Understanding of daily maintenance procedures for efficient machine/equipment performance
• Knowledge of supporting water utilisation and water resource strategy
• Knowledge of health and safety procedures
• Understanding of garden maintenance and planting practices
• A basic understanding of Government legislation
• Must be able and willing to work in or near rivers, dams, canals and confined spaces

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform general assistant work including loading and offloading furniture, equipment, and other goods
• Cleaning government vehicles, machinery, equipment, and workstations
• Cleaning lawns, pruning trees, and maintaining grounds, canals, and office grounds
• Repair tools and structures such as buildings, fences, around canal dam areas, and benches using hand and power tools
• Mix, spray, or spread fertilizers using hand or atomic sprayers or spreaders
• Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, planters, and other ground features
• Maintain existing grounds and gardens by caring for sod, plants, and trees, raking and mulching leaves, and irrigating plants and lawns
• Sweep walkways, grounds, and clean buildings by sweeping and washing floors
• Perform labouring duties to support maintenance, repair, and construction of departmental infrastructure
• Assist with cleaning and repairing water supply systems like canals, drains, dams, and pipelines as well as repairs to department buildings
