EDUCATION THERAPIST SPECIALIST - OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

Job Overview

An Education Therapist Specialist (Occupational Therapist) position is available in the Eastern Cape (MT. Frere CMC, Humansdorp CMC, and Lusikisiki CMC). Applicants must hold an RVQ 13/14 qualification in Occupational Therapy, be registered with the HPCSA, and possess five years of relevant post-registration experience. SACE registration is an advantage. Responsibilities include assessing learners, providing direct and indirect therapy, managing assistive devices, conducting capacity-building programmes, and collaborating with multidisciplinary stakeholders under education and health policies.

Requirements & Qualifications

• RVQ 13/14 qualification in Occupational Therapy recognised by SAQA.
• Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Occupational Therapist.
• Registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) will be an added advantage.
• Five-years of relevant experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
• Knowledgeable about National and Provincial Education legislation, policies and regulations (e.g. Health Professions Act, SIAS, SASA, EEA, White Paper 6).
• Knowledge of analytic, diagnostic and assessment tools.
• Knowledge of intervention methods and child development.
• Knowledge of therapeutic models and techniques, group dynamics, protocol and professional ethics.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Assess learner level of functioning to identify barriers to learning based on Occupational Therapist scope of practice.
• Conduct screening for learners and administer formal and informal assessments.
• Analyse and interpret information to make decisions regarding therapeutic intervention, multidisciplinary team discussions, recommendations and referrals.
• Provide direct and indirect Occupational Therapy services to learners in public special schools and public ordinary schools.
• Determine individualized and group Occupational Therapy, and prescribe, issue, and maintain assistive devices.
• Engage in therapeutic capacity building programmes and skills sharing on related therapy issues.
• Promote awareness of different therapy disciplines and participate in awareness campaigns of different disabilities.
• Supervise undergraduate Occupational Therapy students and therapy assistants as required.
• Manage therapy support materials and equipment, request adequate supplies, and report maintenance needs.
• Participate in inter- and intra-sectoral networks and collaborations with stakeholders like Department of Health and Department of Social Development.
• Manage effective administration practices and ensure compliance with HPCSA Code of Ethics.
