Job Overview

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is hiring a Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions for the Specialised Commercial Crime Unit (SCCU) based in Gqeberha. Offering a total cost package of R1,625,709 per annum (Level 14), the role requires an LLB, at least ten years of post-qualification litigation experience, and right of appearance under section 25(2) of the NPA Act. Responsibilities include managing portfolios, prosecuting high-level corruption and criminal cases, mentoring advocates and prosecutors, and strategic division management. Requirements & Qualifications

• An LLB degree (or any appropriate legal qualification for serving prosecutors seeking promotion)
• At least ten (10) years’ post qualification experience in civil and/or criminal litigation
• Demonstrable competency in acting independently, professionally, accountably and with credibility
• Admission as an Attorney or Advocate will be an added advantage
• Good advocacy and legal drafting skills
• Knowledge of civil and/or criminal procedure
• Right of appearance as contemplated in section 25(2) of the NPA Act, 32 of 1998
• Good interpersonal, analytical, presentation and communication skills
• Computer skills
• Ability to work extended hours
• Valid driver’s license

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Manage the portfolio assigned by the SCCU Regional Head and the DPP
• Manage, train and guide Advocates, Prosecutors and stakeholders in complex and high-profile matters across high courts, highest court of appeal, and Constitutional Court
• Investigate and prosecute cases
• Provide high level and well researched opinions and reports to the Regional Head of the SCCU
• Provide legal oversight and guidance in investigation projects and legal casework
• Study case dockets and documents relating to corruption and criminal matters to make and review prosecution decisions
• Prepare cases for court including acquiring additional evidence and drafting charge sheets and indictments
• Present the state’s case in court, including examination of witnesses and addressing court on conviction and sentence
• Study appeals and reviews, prepare opinions and heads of argument, and argue cases in court
• Appear in motion applications pertaining to criminal matters
• Map out strategic planning for the division and lead staff towards achieving strategic objectives
• Oversee resources and align them to strategic objectives
• Develop, manage performance, and assess staff members
• Deal with representations and complaints
• Ensure high standards of professional work and promote partner integration and customer satisfaction
