DEPUTY DIRECTOR: MATERNAL HEALTH/VTP

Job Overview

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health is seeking a Deputy Director: Maternal Health/VTP based at Head Office in Pietermaritzburg. The successful candidate will develop, facilitate, monitor, and evaluate strategies to reduce maternal morbidity, mortality, and vertical transmission of HIV, syphilis, and Hepatitis B. Requirements include an NQF 7/6 in Nursing or an MBCHB degree, current SANC or HPCSA registration, at least 3 years as an Assistant Director, 5 years post-registration experience in maternal health, a valid driver's license, and computer literacy.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Matric Certificate (Grade 12).
• An undergraduate qualification (NQF 7) or Diploma (NQF 6) in Nursing, or Medical degree (MBCHB).
• Current registration with SANC or HPCSA.
• A minimum of three (3) years’ experience as an Assistant Director.
• Five (5) years’ experience after registration with a professional body in Maternal Health Programme.
• Valid code EB Driver’s License (code 8).
• Computer literacy.
• A Master’s Degree in Public Health or similar in research will be an added advantage.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop, review, and ensure implementation of relevant maternal health and VTP policies and guidelines.
• Develop and implement strategies to reduce maternal and perinatal health-related morbidity and mortality, including HIV-related.
• Offer assistance and technical support to all districts to improve Maternal Health and VTP Services.
• Liaise with national and provincial Departments of Health, funders (like UNICEF), partners, and local stakeholders.
• Facilitate training of midwives and doctors on new developments, protocols, and skills maintenance (e.g., ESMOE, Emotive).
• Monitor and evaluate maternal health services, review data elements, and prepare quarterly reports with remedial actions.
• Coordinate provincial maternal mortality confidential enquiries and the Provincial perinatal morbidity and mortality committee.
